FLORA

No matter what the environment, a species of Flora can almost always be found in the United Kingdom and you will see many of them here.

Please note that this is not a strictly 'native' species or taxonomic collection.

We have a long history in the UK of bringing new and often exotic flora into our country. This activity began in Victorian times when wealthy landowners with large estates wanted to bring in exotic collections for their gardens. This has not always been beneficial and species such as Rhododendron, Himalayan Balsam, Japanese Knotweed, Skunk Cabbage and others have become an invasive problem. Some agricultural crops such as Rape and Flax have also managed to find their way into the wild and become widely established. As avid gardeners, we have also grown many exotic and non-native species in our gardens. They have also managed to 'escape' and establish themselves in the wild.

The galleries also include many of these 'non-native' but widely established floral species.

In addition to 'vascular' flower species I have included galleries for many other commonly seen species including:

Evergreens, Ferns, Fungi, Lichen, Liverworts , Mosses, Trees and Grasses. Each Section will introduce them.

The Galleries

For simplicity, flower species are displayed by their predominant flower colour with a separate section for Orchids.

I will also include a 'look up list' of flower species for those who want to quickly see specific species by name.

The galleries are not in anyway 'complete' and new species will be added on a regular basis.

Simply click on any thumbnail and a larger captioned image will appear.

Please enjoy the Galleries.
